چکیده
With the growth of hypertext a n d mult imedia applications tha t s u p p o r t a n d encourage browsing it is t ime to t a k e a penet ra t ing look a t browsing behavior. Several dimensions of browsing a r e examined, to find out: first, what is browsing a n d what cognitive processes a r e associated with it; second, is there a browsing strategy, and if so, a r e there any differences between how subjec t -area experts and novices browse; a n d finally, how can this knowledge be applied to improve the design of hypertext systems. Two groups of students, subjec t -area exper ts a n d novices, were studied while browsing a Macintosh H y p e r c a r d application on the subject of T h e Vietnam War . A protocol analysis technique was used to g a t h e r a n d analyze data. Components of the G O M S model were used to describe the goals, opera tors , methods, a n d selection rules observed. Three browsing strategies were identified: 1) search-oriented browse, scanning a n d reviewing information relevant to a fixed task, 2) reviewbrowse, scanning and reviewing interesting information in the presence of t rans ient browse goals t ha t represent changing tasks, a n d 3) scan-browse, scanning for interesting information (without review). Most subjects primari ly used review-browse interspersed with search-oriented browse. Within this strategy, comparisons between subjec t -area experts a n d novices revealed differences in tactics: exper ts browsed in more depth , seldom used referential links, selected different kinds of topics, and viewed information differently than d id novices. Based on these findings, suggestions a r e m a d e to hypertext developers.

ART-SHTA: A Tool for Sculptural Hypertext Authoring
The ART-SHTA (Sculptural HyperText Authoring) tool supports information and concept structuring for analytical and scholarly compositional tasks. ART-SHTA employs three hypertext techniques: sculptural hypertext, spatial hypertext, and hierarchy browsing. While the notion of sculptural hypertext was originally introduced to provide tools for hypertext narratives, our approach demonstrates that ...
متن کاملIndividual differences in hypertext browsing strategies
The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in web browsing strategies between older and younger participants and also between individuals displaying verbaliser and imager cognitive styles. Typically, verbalisers process information in word form, whereas imagers process information in terms of images. Ten minutes each were allowed to 58 participants to read information in either a ...
متن کاملThe User Interface in a Hypertext, Multiwindow Program Browser
The program browsing problem is discussed, with particular emphasis on a multiple-window user interface and its implications for recording acquired knowledge, navigation, and attention-tracking. Hypertext systems are considered as an implementation of browsing techniques for nonprogram text. A classification scheme for text-viewing systems is offered, and then browsing is discussed as a nonintr...
متن کاملIncidental Learning During Information Retrieval: A Hypertext Experiment
A study was conducted in a hypertext environment in order to examine the effects of the type of fact-retrieval search (browsing vs. index-using) on incidental learning. It was hypothesized that browsing would lead to more incidental learning; from a cognitive viewpoint, it would appear that browsers would have more opportunity to make connections between the various articles, which would result...
متن کاملDesigning to Facilitate Browsing: A Look Back at the Hyperties Workstation Browser
Since browsing hypertext can present a formidable cognitive challenge, user interface design plays a major role in determining acceptability. In the Unix workstation version of Hyperties, a research-oriented prototype, we focussed on design features that facilitate browsing. We first give a general overview of Hyperties and its markup language. Customizable documents can be generated by the con...
